Khatami Drops out

Iran has fascinated the world for centuries together. It has romance, intrigue and is secretive. Shah of Iran was a romantic character, though deemed a US puppet. After the revolution to abolish Shah, Iran fought a long and fruitless war with Iraq. Consequently, there were two Gulf wars and much turmoil. The current political dispensation in Iran is giving a lots of headache and sleepless nights to US policy makers.

Next June, Iran will go to polls for President. Ahmedinejad will be there in the fray as the incumbent, though he has not yet announced his candidacy. He is backed by Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Khatami had declared his candidacy earler. But todays papers say he has planned to withdraw from the race.

Now, the former prime minister Mir Hossein Mousavi and ex-speaker Mehdi Karroubi will remain in the fray. Both these candidates are reformist.  May be the idea is not to divide reformist votes and give a tougher challenge to Ahmedinejad.
